Art That Connects: Building Community in the Tenderloin

Community engagement is at the heart of my practice because the Tenderloin is not just where I live-it is my home and inspiration. Through art, I aim to highlight the hidden beauty, history, and spirit of this neighborhood, using my work to connect people, spark appreciation, and foster pride in our shared spaces. By collaborating with local organizations, teaching at the Hospitality House Community Arts Program, and creating public art, I help neighbors express themselves and see value in their surroundings. This engagement is important to me because it strengthens community bonds, encourages self-expression, and empowers others, especially low-income residents, to find their voice through creativity. The Tenderloin community benefits by gaining more inclusive, beautiful public spaces, increased opportunities for creative participation, and a deeper sense of belonging and resilience. My art is a reminder that, despite challenges, there is much to celebrate here-and when we share and connect, that beauty grows for everyone.
